Once Griffin was acquired by the Yankees of the South Lebanon Tee Ball league I knew a trip to see the MLB Yankees was inevitable. Now is a great time to introduce young fans to the Yankees as they’ve moved away from the old guard and developed a core of exciting young talent. Catcher Gary Sanchez and Right Fielder Aaron Judge have revitalized a roster formerly known for signing free agents on downside of their careers. Last season Sanchez came up from AAA Scranton to hit 24 homeruns in 53 games to finish second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting. [Read more…]
Nola’s a Nightmare for Mets Lineup in Flux
I usually wait to purchase baseball tickets until game day but when the Phillies 2017 promotions schedule was released I knew if I wanted good seats for the August 12th Wall of Fame night against the Mets I had to act fast. Thanks to StubHub I was able to find first row tickets in the Terrace Deck on February 10th; now the only thing to find out was who would be inducted into the Wall of Fame. [Read more…]
The Circle of (Baseball) Life
When I moved from Brooklyn to Pennsylvania in 2007 I could purchase Phillies tickets day of the game at Citizens Bank Park. Practically any game I wanted to attend, mostly when the Mets were in town, I could plan on finding a good seat at face value. I took advantage of this when Reaghan was little; she was 5 during the 2007 season. We went to a few games, sat on the Field Level and enjoyed watching what would become a championship team. Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Cole Hamels and Jimmy Rolllins would lead the Phillies to five consecutive National League East titles. In 2008 they defeated the Tampa Bay Rays to win their first World Series title in twenty-eight years. The days of walking up to the box office and buying a ticket were over. Throughout the Phillies run of division titles Citizens Bank Park was the place to be, selling out 257 consecutive games from 2009-2012. For once Philadelphia wasn’t an Eagles town, the city fell in love with those Phillies teams. [Read more…]
The Strawa that Stirs the Drink
When the 2017 MLB scheduled was released the first game I circled on my calendar was the May 27th match-up between the Mets and Pirates at PNC Park. It was an opportunity to see my favorite team in my favorite park while bringing my family along for the ride. To date I’ve attended Mets road games in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Milwaukee, Atlanta, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Houston with success. There is nothing like walking out of “enemy” territory with a road win. Despite the Mets early struggles in the 2017 I was hopeful for a good showing in the Burgh but the Pirates had other ideas. Watson’s Western Ballpark Tour
Lubec, Maine is the easternmost town in the contiguous United States and is the closest continental location to Africa in the United States. It is also home to Effectively Wild listener and Tony Kornheiser Little Isaac Watson Stephenson. (La Cheesiere!) The closest MLB ballpark to Lubec is Fenway Park, a mere 350 miles away. This fact does not stop Isaac from following his Detroit Tigers. [Read more…]
Nine with the Nerd: Rob Giancola
I’ve known Rob Giancola since Our Savior Lutheran Pre-School back in the mid-80s. We became good friends during our high school years at Xaverian where every morning we broke down sports with our classmates in the cafeteria over powdered egg sandwiches and bagels. (It was an all-boys Catholic school at the time). We also bonded over the NBC Police Drama “Homicide: Life on the Streets” which featured Yaphet Kotto as Baltimore Homicide Lieutenant and all around good guy Al Giardello whose squad affectionately called him Gee. At Xaverian we took a similar approach calling our friends by their last names which is how Rob Giancola to this day is Gee to me. Gee’s friendship has meant a lot since those days and even though he’s a Yankees fan we make it out to the ballpark every year where we break down the action like we did twenty years ago.
