Take a pregame walk across the Roberto Clemente Bridge and purchase a Grandstand ticket on the 3rd base side. The confluence of Pittsburgh’s downtown, bridges, and rivers are worth the price of admission. A night game at PNC Park is my baseball nirvana.
The Strawa that Stirs the Drink
When the 2017 MLB scheduled was released the first game I circled on my calendar was the May 27th match-up between the Mets and Pirates at PNC Park. It was an opportunity to see my favorite team in my favorite park while bringing my family along for the ride. To date I’ve attended Mets road games in Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Milwaukee, Atlanta, Baltimore, Pittsburgh and Houston with success. There is nothing like walking out of “enemy” territory with a road win. Despite the Mets early struggles in the 2017 I was hopeful for a good showing in the Burgh but the Pirates had other ideas. Ballpark Nerd recommends staying downtown and walking across the Clemente Bridge to PNC. If you have to drive I recommend finding a public lot downtown and walking across the Clemente Bridge. With Great American Ballpark and Jacobs Field behind us, Mike and I had one more city to visit on our September Central Division Ballpark tour. After visiting the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, we set out for Pittsburgh, a two-hour drive east of Cleveland. Pittsburgh had recently been flooded by horrendous thunderstorms. Boats were blown off their docks and stretches of major highway had to be closed. These two occurrences combined to create a scene out of a movie – boats stranded on the highway. Mike and I were lucky to avoid the storm; we planned to attend the Sunday afternoon game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and our hometown New York Mets. Due to the inclement weather, the Friday game was rained out and rescheduled as part of a Sunday doubleheader. It would be the first doubleheader I ever attended.
